Shamanic healing is an ancient modality which involves working with the energies of the natural world to aid healing. Here, we explore what Shamanic healing is in more detail, including its benefits and what you can expect from sessions.

What is Shamanic healing?

Shamanic healing is a type of energy healing modality in which practitioners work with the spirits and energies of the natural world to promote healing. Similar to other energy healing approaches, such as Reiki and Pranic Healing, Shamanic healing aims to clear and rebalance blocked energy from our bodies.

Shamanic healing has been used by Indigenous people for thousands of years. In fact, it pre-dates religion, though it isn’t a religion in itself; rather, it is a set of beliefs and practices.

Shamanism refers to the broader practice and belief system in which a shaman (someone who is believed to have the ability to communicate with the spirit world) connects with spirits and acts as an intermediary between the spirit world and the human world. Shamanic healing refers to the practice of using shamanic techniques to identify physical, emotional and spiritual imbalances within a person and help them heal.

How does Shamanic healing work?

Energy healing works on the basis that any physical or psychological illness we experience is indicative of stuck or blocked energy within our bodies. Rebalancing our energy allows our body, mind and soul to work in harmony, therefore, preventing or better managing physical and mental conditions.

Different energy healing modalities have slightly different approaches to how energy blockages are identified and treated. For example, Pranic Healing scans the body’s aura, Reiki relies on the practitioner's attunements, and crystal healing involves placing crystals with different energies around the body.

In Shamanic healing, a shaman will access the spirit world by using techniques such as drumming, meditation or breathwork. This allows them to communicate with spirit guides and energies which act as entities to support the shaman, helping them address any imbalances within a person’s well-being.

Once a shaman has located the problematic area, they use techniques to extract the negative energy, cleanse the aura and restore balance. Shamanic healing is a holistic approach, meaning it looks at the person as a whole, taking into account their spiritual, mental and physical well-being.

What is Shamanic healing for?

Whilst Shamanic healing is not scientifically proven, there are thought to be numerous benefits based on people’s experiences with this healing modality. Shamanic healing can be used to help address physical, mental and emotional issues. Examples include:

  • feeling spiritually disconnected
  • depression
  • anxiety
  • stress
  • grief
  • relationship problems

Shamanic healing can also help people develop a greater sense of self-awareness, boost their creativity and foster personal development.

What happens in a Shamanic healing session?

The primary goal of Shamanic healing is to restore harmony and balance within the body. Shamanic healing sessions involve working closely with a practitioner and drawing on the energy around us and in nature.

Sessions typically begin with an initial consultation, where a practitioner will get to know you and ensure that this approach will suit you and your needs. This usually involves a general discussion about what issues you are experiencing and what you would like help with, as well as what you hope to gain from sessions. During this consultation, your Shamanic healer will tap into your energy to try and identify where possible blockages are and how they can best support you.

In Shamanic healing sessions, you’ll remain fully clothed and will either sit or lie down. It is generally hands-off, but in some cases, a light touch may be used.

Journeying

To begin the process, the practitioner may set an intention for what they would like to achieve. They’ll then enter an altered state of consciousness, which is achieved through practices like playing or listening to a shamanic drum (drumming), rhythmic chanting or breathwork. The process of entering the trance-like state is known as the ‘journey.’

Journeying - also known as a ‘soul flight’ - is the process of entering the altered state of consciousness to connect with the spirit world. This allows the healer to gain insights into the area that you are struggling with.

Diagnosis

Once the root cause of your situation has been identified, the Shamanic healer can make a diagnosis. It’s important to note that this isn’t considered a medical diagnosis; rather, it is a personal interpretation of the spirit guide’s insights. A diagnosis also typically encompasses the whole self, so it’s not just physical. Diagnoses may include:

  • Lost soul parts - where part of a client’s soul may be missing. This could be due to trauma or a difficult life experience, for example.
  • Negative energies - this could cause disruptions in the body.
  • Ancestral wounds - issues from the client’s past generations that are affecting their present.

Soul retrieval and extraction

The final part of the process seeks to help a client heal from the identified issue. A particular practice within Shamanic healing is soul retrieval, where a practitioner tries to locate lost parts of a person’s soul and reintegrate them back into the client’s energy field. This allows the person to feel more complete and ‘whole.’

Extraction refers to the removal of misplaced energies, which are believed to cause physical or emotional distress. In extractions, Shamans use symbolic tools (like their hands or feathers) to remove the energy.

The healing process in Shamanism is often referred to as a ceremony. Ceremonies are an important part of Shamanic healing. This process creates a sacred space to honour the energies and spirits of the natural world.

How will I feel after Shamanic healing?

After a Shamanic healing session, you’re likely to feel renewed vitality. Many people report feeling ‘lighter’, more grounded and a sense of peace. Common feelings include:

  • deep relaxation
  • increased self-awareness
  • rejuvenation
  • greater spiritual connection

Ultimately, everyone's experience of Shamanic healing will be unique to them. It is normal to experience a range of emotions. Some people even feel temporary discomfort or are more emotional as the negative energy is released from their bodies. Over time, you should begin to notice a shift in how you feel towards (or respond to) your situation.

Is Shamanic healing safe?

Shamanic healing is a safe non-touch modality when practised by a qualified professional. However, it is important to be aware of the potentially difficult emotions that can arise. It’s key to disclose any medical conditions and consult with a healthcare professional prior to having Shamanic healing. Remember, Shamanic healing should be used alongside conventional medicine, not as a replacement for it.

How much does Shamanic healing cost?

Shamanic healing sessions can vary in price between about £60 - £200 per session. This is likely to depend on several factors, including the healer’s location and experience. Some healers may also offer packages for multiple sessions at a discounted rate. To get an idea of how many sessions you may need and at what cost, we’d recommend contacting a Shamanic healer directly.

Finding a professional

It’s important to find a verified and culturally sensitive Shamanic healing professional. Be sure to browse healers online or near you and reach out to those you resonate with to find out more about them and how they work. Don’t be afraid to ask questions about their experience or insurance coverage, for example. It may also be helpful to source recommendations from others who have experienced Shamanic healing.

If you’re ready to explore the benefits of Shamanic healing and discover a deeper connection to yourself, reach out to a professional to get started.
